Parliament will be bicameral, with a total of 505 seats!

The Constitutional Reform Commission is going to recommend major changes to the National Parliament. According to the new proposal, the parliament will be bicameral. There will be 400 seats in the lower house and 105 seats in the upper house.

Elections to the lower house will be held under the current system. Out of these, 100 seats will be reserved for women through direct voting. On the other hand, 100 seats in the upper house will be held under the proportional representation system. Parties will get these seats in proportion to the votes they received in the national elections. The remaining 5 seats have been proposed for the nomination of the President to ensure representation of the backward sections of the society.

According to the Constitutional Reform Commission, these recommendations have been made with the aim of preventing the concentration of power in the hands of one person and bringing a balance of power. In addition, the recommendations emphasize the balance of power between the Prime Minister and the President, the accountability of the executive branch, and the independence of the judiciary.

The commission's report will be submitted to Professor Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government, tomorrow. In this regard, the head of the commission, Professor Ali Riaz, said, "We are making such recommendations that power is not concentrated in the hands of one person in the future."

According to relevant sources, changes have also been proposed in the electoral system and law-making structure. Based on the report, the interim government is expected to start a dialogue with political parties.

In recent times, the BNP and other political parties have also proposed the formation of a bicameral parliament. It is known that their views have been reflected in the draft recommendations of the commission.

Experts believe that if these proposed changes are implemented in the constitutional framework of the country, a new chapter will begin in the democratic system.
