Supercomputer predicts France close to winning the World Cup

Published: 12:27 13 July 2026
After 100 matches of thrills, surprises and dramatic battles, the 2026 World Cup is now in the last four. France, Spain, England and the current champion Argentina are still in the title race. France's opponent is Spain in the semi-finals, and Argentina will face England in the other match.
All four teams are former World Cup champions. France won the title in 1998 and 2018, Argentina is the current champion, Spain won the World Cup for the first time in 2010. England's only title came in 1966. This time, the English have a chance to end a 60-year wait.
Before the semi-finals, Opter supercomputer analysis has given France the best chance of winning the World Cup. The model gives Kylian Mbappe a 57 percent chance of reaching the final and a 34 percent chance of winning the title.
France's consistent performance, strong attack and experience of winning big matches have put them ahead. France is also ranked at the top of the recent performance-based power rankings.
Spain has the second-highest chance of winning the title in the supercomputer's list. The team has a 42 percent chance of reaching the final and a 23 percent chance of winning the trophy. Ball control, strong defense and fast football from young players have made Spain a major contender.
England has a 22 percent chance of winning the title and a little over 50 percent chance of reaching the final. Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham are playing important roles for the team that secured the last four with an extra-time win against Norway. England have reached the semi-finals for the second time in the last three World Cups.
The Opter model puts defending champions Argentina slightly behind. Lionel Messi's team has a 21 percent chance of retaining the title and a 49 percent chance of reaching the final. However, the experience of handling difficult situations in the knockout stage and Messi's influence give Argentina the power to change the course of the match at any moment.
Although France is given the numerical advantage, the gap between the four teams is not very large. A red card, injury, penalty or a few moments of individual skill can change the outcome of the semi-final. So, although the supercomputer's calculations show a possible picture, it is not a sure result.
The winner of the France-Spain match will face the winner of the England-Argentina match in the final. The last four teams of the World Cup have experience of success in major tournaments, the final battle for the title is likely to be more competitive.
