Mirza Fakhrul to take oath as the country's 23rd President today

Senior BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will take oath as the country's 23rd President today (August 21). The swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected President is scheduled to be held at the Bangabhaban Darbar Hall at 7 pm. Acting Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Kaiser Kamal will administer the oath to him.
Elected President with 255 votes
Earlier, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir won the presidential election held in the Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday (August 20) with 255 votes. His rival, Col. (retd.) Oli Ahmed, the candidate of the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami, got 88 votes. The results were announced by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin.
A total of 349 voters participated in the presidential election. Of these, 343 voted and six MPs did not vote, the CEC said.
EC issues notification
After the election results were announced, the Election Commission (EC) issued a notification declaring Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir elected as the 23rd President of Bangladesh. The notification was issued on Thursday night under the signature of EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed.
In the notification, he was declared elected as the President as per Section 11 of the Presidential Election Act, 1991 and Rule 12(6) of the Presidential Election Rules, 1991.
Congratulations in Parliament
After the results were announced, members of Parliament congratulated the newly elected President by thumping the table. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman rose from his seat, shook hands with Mirza Fakhrul and greeted him with flowers. Later, the opposition leader and other members of Parliament also congratulated him.
Swearing-in ceremony at Bangabhaban today
After all the election formalities are over, the new President will be sworn in at Bangabhaban this evening. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will formally assume the duties of the President of Bangladesh through the oath.
