A Sea of Tribute at Shaheed Minar: The Nation Remembers Its Language Martyrs

On the occasion of Amar Ekushey February, observed as Shaheed দিবস (Martyrs’ Day) and International Mother Language Day, the premises of the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka turned into a solemn gathering of remembrance and unity. From the very first hours of 21 February, people from all walks of life thronged the historic monument to pay their heartfelt tribute to the martyrs of the Language Movement. Political parties, social and cultural organizations, educational institutions, and ordinary citizens placed floral wreaths at the altar, creating an atmosphere filled with reverence and collective pride.
At 12:01 am, President Mohammad Sahabuddin led the nation in paying homage by placing a wreath at the memorial. Shortly afterward, at 12:08 am, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman offered tribute, accompanied by members of the cabinet. Following the state ceremony, various political parties continued the tradition of laying wreaths in memory of the language heroes.
Leaders of different alliances and political groups also joined in the observance. A delegation led by the Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami paid tribute, alongside lawmakers and coalition partners. Members of the higher judiciary and senior government officials likewise honored the martyrs, reflecting a unified national commitment to remembering the sacrifices made for the mother tongue.
The armed forces paid their respects with due solemnity, as the chiefs of the Army, Navy, and Air Force placed wreaths on behalf of their respective services. Representatives from academia were equally present. The Vice-Chancellor of University of Dhaka, along with teachers and students, offered floral tributes, underscoring the enduring connection between the Language Movement and the country’s educational institutions.
Numerous political organizations, student bodies, and civic groups participated throughout the day. Student activists arrived in processions, chanting slogans and pledging to uphold the spirit of the Language Movement. Social and cultural organizations also joined, demonstrating the widespread resonance of the day’s significance.
As the morning progressed, the queue of ordinary citizens grew longer, turning the entire Shaheed Minar area into a moving portrait of remembrance. The observance was not merely ceremonial; it stood as a powerful reminder of the historic struggle for linguistic rights and a renewed vow to preserve the dignity and heritage of the Bengali language for generations to come.
