Writ in High Court seeking cancellation of referendum results

A writ has been filed in the High Court challenging the validity of the referendum held on February 12 and demanding the cancellation of the results announced on February 13. On Tuesday (February 17), Bangladesh Supreme Court lawyer ABM Ataul Majid Touhid filed the writ in public interest. The Chief Election Commissioner, Cabinet Secretary and Law Secretary have been made respondents in the writ.
According to the petition, the writ may be heard next week in a High Court bench headed by Justice Fatema Najeeb.
It is worth noting that the 'yes' vote won in the referendum held across the country on February 12. The total voter turnout was 60.26 percent. Akhtar Ahmed, Senior Secretary of the EC Secretariat, announced the results at a briefing held at the Election Commission Building in Agargaon in the capital on February 13.
Giving details of the results, he said that 48 million 74 thousand 429 voters voted 'yes' for the change in the referendum. 22 million 25 million 65 thousand 627 people voted 'no' against it.
