New Year Welcomed with Colorful Fireworks Defying Restrictions

A new year has begun following a series of significant events, including efforts at state reform, incidents of mob violence, a deadly earthquake, the return of Tarique Rahman to the country, and the death of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. Ahead of midnight on Wednesday, colorful fireworks lit up the sky over Dhaka as people welcomed the Christian New Year 2026.

This year’s New Year celebrations took place in a different context, as the country was observing a three-day state mourning following the death of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. In light of the mourning period, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) had announced several restrictions on New Year celebrations.

In a public notice issued on Tuesday, the DMP stated that during the state mourning period, all types of fireworks, firecrackers, sky lanterns, and gas balloons would be prohibited within the Dhaka metropolitan area. The notice also instructed that no cultural programs, DJ parties, or processions be held in open spaces.

However, despite the somber atmosphere and the imposed restrictions, colorful fireworks, sky lanterns, and gas balloons were seen lighting up the night sky in various parts of the capital.

Meanwhile, heightened security measures were put in place at Dhaka University on Thirty-First Night. From Wednesday evening, strict security was enforced at all entry points to the campus, and no outsiders or vehicles were allowed to enter.
