Hilsa fishing to start tomorrow after 22-day ban

The 22-day government ban to protect mother hilsa during the main breeding season of hilsa ends at midnight on Saturday (October 25). Thousands of fishermen are preparing to fish in the river as soon as the ban ends.
The ban began on October 4. For the safe breeding of mother hilsa, a special campaign was conducted for a total of 22 days, including the four days before Ashwini Purnima and the three days after Amavasya. This period was determined according to the advice of the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute and related organizations and considering the opinions of fishermen.
Since both the full moon and the new moon of the breeding season are important for egg laying, these two periods are included so that maximum mother hilsa can safely lay eggs.
According to the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute, as a result of this ban in 2024, 52.5 percent of mother hilsa will have the opportunity to safely lay eggs. As a result, 44.25 billion jatkas have been added to the Hilsa family. These jatkas will turn into mature Hilsa in the future and increase Hilsa production in the country.
