Former MP and singer Momtaz Begum from Manikganj-2 constituency and popular singer Momtaz Begum has been arrested by Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) Police. She was arrested from a house behind Star Kabab in Dhanmondi in the capital on Monday (May 12) at around 11:45 pm. The matter was confirmed by Deputy Police Commissioner of DMP's Media and Public Relations Division Muhammad Talebur Rahman.
According to reliable sources, there is a murder case against Momtaz Begum in Manikganj. The law enforcement agencies have taken legal action against her based on this case.
It is worth noting that Momtaz Begum contested as an Awami League nominated candidate from Manikganj-2 (Singair-Harirampur) constituency in the 12th National Parliament election. However, she was defeated by the party's rebel candidate Dewan Zahid Ahmed Tulu. Since then, Momtaz Begum has not been very active in her constituency. She had been serving as the president of Singair Upazila Awami League for a long time.
It is known that Momtaz Begum, who had become somewhat inactive in party politics, went into hiding after the fall of the Awami League government on August 5. Since then, she has been staying in various places in Dhaka.
A source in the DB police said that after a long surveillance, she was arrested from her Dhanmondi house on Monday night. An investigation is now underway against her and she may be produced in court soon.
This incident has created a new sensation in the local politics of the Awami League.
