Hasnat Abdullah, convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, has strongly condemned the police attack on madrasa teachers. She expressed her anger in a status on Facebook after 3 pm on Sunday.
Hasnat Abdullah wrote in her post, "The entire teaching community in Bangladesh, including Ebtedayi teachers, has been deprived for a long time. I condemn the police torture on Ebtedayi teachers. This is not desirable in any way." Earlier, police lathi-charged independent Ebtedayi madrasa teachers who were taking a stand in Shahbagh in the capital this afternoon, including the announcement of job nationalization.
At that time, police fired sound grenades and water cannons to disperse them. At least six people, including a woman, were injured in the incident. All of them were Ebtedayi teachers. They have been taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Shahbagh Police Station Inspector Md. Asaduzzaman said, "The situation is now normal. There are sufficient police personnel in the Shahbagh area. The protesters are scattered in different areas of Shahbagh and Dhaka University."
