16 cisterns were closed again after 36 hours as the water in Kaptai lake returned to normal. On Monday (September 16) at 8 am, the dam was closed. 216 megawatts of electricity is being produced by keeping 5 units of the power plant operational even though the water tap has been closed.
Earlier last Saturday, when the lake water reached the danger level, the 16 gates of the dam were opened by 6 inches. It releases 9 thousand cusecs of water every second into the Karnaphuli river.
Meanwhile, 216 megawatts of electricity is being produced by keeping 5 units of the power plant operational despite the closure of water taps. It uses 32 thousand cusecs of water per second. The water level of Kaptai Lake was recorded at 108.37 MSL (Mean Sea Level) this morning. The maximum water capacity of the lake is 109 MSL.
On the other hand, even though the water level has decreased a little, still around 15 thousand people in the district are stuck in water. Flooding has occurred in the lower areas of Rangamati Sadar, Longadu, Naniarchar, Barkal, Jurachhari and other upazilas. The water prisoners are spending inhuman days.
ATM Abduzzah, manager of Kaptai hydroelectric power station, said that the water level of the lake is decreasing due to lack of rain, so the gate has been closed. He also said that whether the gate will be opened depends on the rainfall.
