“Golden Time” Treatment for Stroke: Thrombolysis Can Save Lives

Published: 10:59 16 December 2025
Stroke, or a brain attack, is currently considered one of the leading causes of death worldwide and a major reason for long-term disability. About 85% of ischemic stroke patients can regain life and normal functionality through thrombolysis treatment.
Thrombolysis is a modern medical procedure in which drugs like tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) are administered intravenously. This medication dissolves the blood clots in the brain’s blood vessels, restoring blood flow quickly and increasing the chances of recovery in the affected parts of the brain.
Neuroscience specialists emphasize that the first 4.5 hours in ischemic stroke cases are extremely critical. This period is referred to as the “golden time.” Every minute, around 9 million brain cells can die due to lack of oxygen. Therefore, the sooner thrombolysis is initiated, the higher the patient’s chances of recovery.
The ‘BE FAST’ method can be used to identify stroke symptoms:
- B (Balance): Loss of balance
- E (Eyes): Decreased vision
- F (Face): One side of the face drooping
- A (Arms): Weakness in arms or legs
- S (Speech): Difficulty speaking
- T (Time): Go to the hospital immediately without wasting time
Experts stress that as soon as stroke symptoms appear, the patient should be taken to a hospital with a stroke unit and thrombolysis facilities. Prompt treatment can allow patients to return to normal life and prevent permanent disability.
