Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, the former leader of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), who was arrested in a sedition case, has been granted bail by the High Court. Today, Wednesday, a High Court bench comprising Justice Md. Atwar Rahman and Justice Md. Ali Reza passed the order.
Senior lawyer Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya heard the case in court on behalf of Chinmoy Krishna Das. Additional Attorney General Barrister Anik R. Haque and Deputy Attorney General Abdul Jabbar Bhuiyan were on behalf of the state.
Reacting to the court verdict, Chinmoy's lawyer Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya said, "As a result of this order of the High Court, there is no longer any legal obstacle to the release of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari."
It is worth mentioning that on October 25 last year, a large gathering of the Sanatani community was held in Chittagong under the leadership of Chinmoy Das. Then on October 31, a sedition case was filed against him on charges of insulting the national flag. 18 other people were accused in the case along with Chinmoy.
He was then arrested in Dhaka on November 25. On November 26, the Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate rejected the bail application and ordered Chinmoy to be sent to jail. On that day, a clash broke out between Chinmoy's followers and law enforcement officers and lawyers in the court premises. Lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was killed in the clash.
Later, on January 2, the Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court rejected Chinmoy's bail application. Then, Chinmoy applied for bail in the High Court, after which he was granted bail today.
Although Chinmoy's release on bail has been confirmed, the judicial proceedings in the case are still ongoing.
