48 Dead in Nigeria After Consuming Toxic Alcohol

At least 48 people have died in southern Nigeria after consuming toxic locally-made alcohol laced with methanol. Around 100 others are currently undergoing hospital treatment. Local authorities reported that a total of 182 people suffered from poisoning.

The incident occurred in the Odigbo and Irele local government areas of Ondo State. Many of the victims experienced severe physical complications, including loss of vision and kidney or other organ failure.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the high death toll resulted from the contamination of a locally produced, high-alcohol beverage with toxic methanol. Known as "Monkey Tail," this type of herbal alcoholic drink is popular in certain parts of Nigeria.

Authorities stated that at least 15 people, including a suspected producer, have been arrested and are assisting with the police investigation. Officials are looking into where the toxic alcohol was manufactured and how it reached so many people.

Unlike ordinary alcohol (ethanol), methanol is not safe for consumption. Ingesting it can cause severe poisoning; even small amounts can lead to blindness, organ failure, or death.

Locally produced alcohol is popular in rural Nigeria due to its affordability. However, these beverages often lack adequate quality control, increasing the risk of poisoning.

To mitigate such risks, the country's food and drug regulatory agency has moved to enforce a ban on the sale of alcohol in small plastic containers and sachets. A key objective is to limit easy access to these drinks, particularly for children and young people.

This recent incident has reignited concerns regarding the quality and safety of locally produced alcohol in Nigeria. There are also growing calls for stricter oversight regarding the production and sale of illicit or unregulated alcohol.
