China's new rule: You have to watch an ad to buy toilet paper

Published: 01:29 20 September 2025
A controversial new rule has been introduced in some public toilets in China, which has already gone viral on social media. According to the rule, to get free toilet paper, users must first scan a QR code and watch a short ad.
If someone wants to skip the ad and get toilet paper, they have to pay 0.5 renminbi (about 5-6 taka in Bangladeshi currency). In the video, many people are seen buying toilet paper by scanning the QR code and watching the ad. However, due to haste or excessive need, many are buying paper directly by paying.
The new rule has been criticized. According to some, not everyone may always have their mobile phone with them, may not have charge or internet. On the other hand, some are unable to buy toilet paper because they do not have enough money. However, many say that it can be effective in preventing waste.
The controversy over public toilets in China is not new. In 2017, a rule was introduced at the Temple of Heaven Park in Beijing, where users could only get free toilet paper once using facial recognition technology. In addition, some establishments also limited the number of times employees could use the toilet, which was later canceled.
It is currently unknown which city the video was taken from, but it has gone viral on various social media platforms, including X. According to citizens, public toilets should have free facilities. The government has said that this initiative is mainly aimed at reducing waste.
