The new President of the United States, Donald Trump, has decided to revoke the right to citizenship by birth upon taking office. He signed an executive order to this effect on Monday, local time, within hours of being sworn in as president.
The Washington Post reported that according to the new order, if a person comes to the United States illegally or on a temporary visa and gives birth to a child, that child will not receive US citizenship.
While signing the order, Trump acknowledged that the US Constitution guarantees the right to citizenship by birth. Therefore, his decision may face legal challenges. However, he believes that there is a strong legal argument for changing this rule.
After taking office, Trump has taken even bigger steps. He has decided to withdraw the United States from the World Health Organization and has revoked 78 executive orders signed under previous President Joe Biden.
Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on Monday. He was sworn in by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts. Vice President J.D. Vance was sworn in first. Trump was then sworn in.
With Trump's return to power, new debates have begun about US policy and international relations. In particular, these actions he has taken have already sparked widespread discussion.
