"Throat fat can be a 'prediction of death'!

Published: 06:19 3 September 2025
The size of your neck may not only be a style statement, but also an important indicator of your health. According to experts, a large neck circumference can increase your risk of serious diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and sleep apnea — even in people who appear to be of normal weight.
Unlike the old days, now, not only BMI (Body Mass Index) but also neck circumference can help you identify hidden fat and health risks. Fat accumulated around the neck increases cholesterol and blood sugar levels in the blood and can cause problems with heart rate control.
Studies have shown that these health risks are associated with a thick neck:
High blood pressure and irregular heartbeat
Possibility of heart disease and heart failure
Type 2 diabetes and hormonal problems
Sleep apnea, excessive fatigue, risk of accidents
Normal neck circumference:
Men: 17 inches or more
Women: 14 inches or more
Even an increase of just 1 inch can increase health risks.
Some tips to reduce risk:
Regular cardio and weight-bearing exercise (walking, running, cycling, weight lifting)
Get enough sleep
A balanced and healthy diet, high in pulses, fruits and vegetables, low in fat and sugar
Throat circumference — a small but important health indicator. Take a look at your throat in the mirror every day, not just your face. If you take timely steps, it is possible to avoid many complex diseases.
