A new discussion has sparked on social media comparing contemporary popular actor Dev with the legendary icon of Bengali cinema, Uttam Kumar. Actress and host Sudipa Chatterjee drew this comparison during a special episode of the show ‘Dadagiri’ while praising Dev’s popularity and screen presence.

Sudipa remarked that a section of today’s Bengali audience seems to perceive a trace of Uttam Kumar in Dev. Upon hearing this, Dev did not agree to directly compare himself to the legendary actor; instead, he emphasized his deep respect for Uttam Kumar.

Dev shared that he had once heard similar sentiments from the legendary actress Supriya Devi. He recalled how, during a visit to her home, she had mentioned seeing a glimpse of Uttam Kumar in his smile and presence. Receiving such praise from an esteemed actress was certainly a special moment for him.

However, after sharing that memory, Dev clarified his stance. He stated that there is only one ‘Mahanayak’ (Great Actor) and that it is inappropriate to compare anyone else to Uttam Kumar. He expressed that he does not wish to equate his own popularity or success with the stature held by Uttam Kumar.

Following Dev’s comments, other stars present at the event also praised his reaction. Actor Kanchan Mullick jokingly commended Dev for his prudence and good sense.

This incident comes at a time when West Bengal is hosting various exhibitions, cultural events, and commemorative programs marking the birth centenary of Uttam Kumar. Even more than four decades after his passing, discussions regarding Uttam Kumar’s enduring popularity and influence on Bengali cinema continue.

Meanwhile, opinions on social media regarding the comparison between Dev and Uttam Kumar have been divided. Some claim to see traces of the legend in Dev’s smile, screen presence, and popularity. Conversely, many believe that Uttam Kumar occupies a unique and unparalleled position in terms of acting prowess, personality, and his overall impact on Bengali cinema.

Ultimately, however, it is Dev’s own response that has taken center stage in the discussion. By choosing not to capitalize on the comparison and instead acknowledging Uttam Kumar’s distinct historical stature, his remarks have garnered praise from a section of his fans. Despite being one of the biggest stars of the new generation in Bengali cinema, Dev has effectively made it clear—by refusing to draw comparisons between himself and the 'Mahanayak'—that while popularity may fluctuate over time, Uttam Kumar holds a unique place in the history of Bengali cinema.
