A case of beating an autorickshaw driver over a mere 10 taka extortion has created a sensation in Sonargaon, Narayanganj. It is alleged that the auto driver Mominul Mia (40) died while undergoing treatment two days after being seriously injured in an attack by a local extortion gang. When the news of his death spread, angry locals and relatives took to the roads to protest.
When the ambulance carrying the body of the deceased reached the Darikandi area of the Dhaka-Chittagong highway on Wednesday morning, locals blocked it and blocked the road. This disrupted traffic on a part of the highway and created a severe traffic jam. Protesters also took up positions on the Darikandi-Banglabazar road adjacent to the highway. As a result, passengers suffered.
The deceased Mominul Mia is a resident of Nazirpur area of Sanmandi union of the upazila. Locals claim that a gang had been regularly collecting extortion from vehicles and auto-rickshaws in the Darikandi bus stand area for a long time.
According to local sources, when Mominul went to the Darikandi bus stand in his auto-rickshaw on Sunday afternoon, he was demanded for extortion. At that time, he offered to pay, but an argument broke out over it. At one stage, it was alleged that a group of people beat him up. It is also known that he was hit on the head with a stick during the attack.
He was initially treated locally in serious condition, but when his condition deteriorated, he was admitted to a specialized hospital in Dhaka. After being kept under close observation there, he breathed his last on Wednesday morning.
Locals were outraged when the news of his death spread. They alleged that a gang active in the area had been involved in extortion and various immoral activities for a long time. Despite many complaints against them, no effective action was taken. They claim that an innocent working man had to lose his life due to such a situation.
The victim's family had already filed a complaint with the police station in this incident. The victim's wife alleged that extortion was demanded multiple times and the attack took place due to a dispute over money. She claimed that Mominul's condition deteriorated due to a serious head injury.
Police said that the legal process of the case filed in this incident will be taken forward more strictly according to the new situation. A drive is also underway to arrest the accused. To control the situation, law enforcement agencies went to the spot and pacified the protesters and normalized traffic.
