The Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) Police has arrested former Vice Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University (BEROBI) Dr. Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
He was arrested from the capital's Mohammadpur area on Thursday (August 7) afternoon. The matter was confirmed by Deputy Commissioner of the Media and Public Relations Department of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
He said, "There was a requisition in a case under investigation by the ACC on corruption charges. Accordingly, he was arrested from his own house in Mohammadpur. The process of handing him over to the ACC is underway."
On June 18, the ACC filed a case against Dr. Kalimullah and five others on charges of embezzling money from a university development project.
The case statement states that the accused, in collusion with each other, changed the design without following the university's approved DPP (Development Project Proposal) and signed a contract worth more than Tk 300 million without the approval of the ministry.
In addition, they deposited the security deposit deducted from the contractor's running bill as FDR in the bank and placed it in lien and issued a 'No Objection Certificate', through which it is alleged that about Tk 40 million was embezzled from the government.
