The recovery of an abandoned mortar shell from the Chilka River in Panchagarh's Sadar Upazila has created a sensation in the area. While extracting stones, the workers took the object home thinking it was something valuable, but it was later identified as a mortar shell.
On Wednesday evening, workers Anwar Hossain, Ferdous and Mominul Islam found the object while extracting stones from the Chilka River in the Bora Jhitkikhura area of Satmera Union in Sadar Upazila. At first, they thought it was a valuable metal object and took it to their home.
According to local sources, when the matter became known in the area after taking it home, panic spread about the object. At one stage, the workers left the mortar shell on the side of the road next to the house of Abdus Salam in the Bora Jhitkikhura area and left.
On receiving the information, a team of Panchagarh Sadar Police Station reached the spot, recovered the mortar shell and took it to the police station. Later, the matter was reported to the concerned authorities for safety reasons.
Panchagarh Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ashraful Islam said, “The mortar shell was found abandoned while extracting sand and stones. The matter has been reported to the Army’s Bomb Disposal Unit. Further action will be taken as per their advice.”
The incident has raised curiosity as well as concern among the locals. To ensure safety, the administration has requested everyone to inform the law enforcement agencies immediately without touching any suspicious or explosive-like object.
