Three more people, including a seller, have died after drinking rectified spirit (alcohol) in Rangpur. This has increased the death toll in the last three days to seven. Apart from this, several others are seriously ill, police said.
According to police, two more people died on the night of January 13 in an alcohol-related incident in Shyampur area of Rangpur. They are Abdul Malek, son of Mohir Uddin of Purba Shibpur village of Gopalpur union of Badarganj upazila, and Rashedul Islam, son of the late Mofazzal Hossain of Shyampur Bandar College Para of Rangpur Sadar upazila. Spirit seller and prisoner Joynal Abedin also died on Wednesday morning in the same incident.
Senior Jail Superintendent of Rangpur Central Jail Abhijit Chowdhury said that Joynal Abedin, a drug dealer arrested from Shyampur in Badarganj, was brought to the jail as a new prisoner on the evening of January 13. After some time, he fell ill and was admitted to the CCU of Rangpur Medical College Hospital. He died there at 7 am on Wednesday.
The incident has raised questions among locals about the violence of liquor dealers. Many allege that despite such deaths occurring across the country, the arrested dealers are released on bail and engaged in the same business again. Even while in jail, their business does not stop. Locals claim that if liquor dealers are effectively controlled, it will be possible to keep lives and families safe and addicts will no longer be able to drink dangerous liquor.
