A massive fire has gutted six jhum warehouses in Gazipur city's Baburchi More area. The fire broke out around 6:30 am on Wednesday (November 5). Four units of the fire service were able to bring the fire under control around 9:15 am after about three hours of effort.
Konabari Modern Fire Service Inspector Saiful Islam said from the scene, "After receiving information about a fire at a jhum warehouse in Baburchi More area, our four units quickly reached the spot and started working to control the fire. The fire was completely brought under control around 9:15 am. However, it is still not certain how the fire started."
According to local residents and fire service sources, locals first saw smoke coming out of a warehouse around 6:30 am. They initially tried to put out the fire, but within moments the fire spread to neighboring warehouses. As the fire intensified, four units of Konabari Modern Fire Service and Chowrasta Fire Station rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after about three hours of effort.
According to the initial information of the fire service, at least six jhut warehouses were completely burnt down in the fire. The extent of the damage in the fire has not yet been ascertained. However, traders are claiming that they have suffered losses worth crores of taka in the fire.
Local residents said that many jhut and waste storage facilities have been built side by side in the area. As these warehouses do not have adequate fire extinguishing systems, the risk of fire always remains.
The fire service said that an investigation committee will be formed to determine the exact cause of the fire and the source of the damage. Initially, it is believed that the fire may have started from an electrical short circuit.
