During a drive against battery rickshaws in Chittagong, rickshaw drivers attacked a traffic police box. The incident took place in the Khulshi Rail Gate area on Wednesday (August 13) night.
Khulshi Police Station OC Aftab Hossain said that in the afternoon, an anti-illegal battery rickshaw drive was conducted in the Ambagan area via Jalalabad and Wireless intersections with additional forces from Khulshi Police Station and Traffic North Division. After the drive at Jalalabad and Wireless intersections, when the police reached Ambagan, the auto drivers blocked them. At the same time, another group of drivers vandalized the traffic police box in the Rail Gate area.
The OC said that two people have been arrested in the incident. He also said, “A constable in charge of the Traffic North Division was injured when the drivers threw bricks and stones. The drivers also stole a sergeant’s bag.”
A campaign to stop battery rickshaw violence has been going on in Chittagong for a long time. In April this year, there was a clash between the police and the drivers. Earlier on Monday, the city police issued a public notice urging the public not to use battery rickshaws.
